Comfort Reading...

The last couple of weeks have been pretty full on work wise - I have found myself coming home with not much brain power or energy for reading and the feeling that I need a book to comfort me - if that makes sense??

So, I went on a book buying mission for this very purpose and came home with I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith with it's gorgeous Vintage Edition cover. I have read this book before but thanks to my inability to retain my reading for longer than a couple of weeks it's like I'm reading it for the first time. Except for that glorious, comforting feeling - I do remember that!
What other books have people read that bring on that comforted feeling??

I love I Capture The Castle! It definitely ranks up there as a comfort read. Other books I read when I need something guaranteed to satisfy: the Harry Potter series, Jane Austen, and mysteries from the Golden Era (think Agatha Christie)!

My copy is the same as yours. Isn't it gorgeous? Steph above recommended it to me. :)

A few of my comfort reads: The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, The Princess Bride by S Morgenstern (William Goldman), The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King.

I totally agree with you on comfort reads--I rely on them quite often. Reading Eva Rice's The Lost Secret of Happiness was a very comforting experience. Now I'm reading a WWII novel by Sarah Harrison--A Flower That's Free, which is a nice sprawling family drama! I love I Capture the Castle by the way!!

We all need some escapist reading now and again! I love I capture the castle, the perfect book to curl up with.

I'd second the suggestion of Austen and The Princess Bride, and also like Maeve Binchy, Mary Wesley, P G Wodehouse and Arthur Conan Doyle when I need cheering up.

Hi Steph - Jane Austen is always a favourite of mine during times like this too. I actually tossed up between I Capture The Castle and Northanger Abbey.

Hi Claire - I absolutely adore the cover - and I want that dress! Thanks for your suggestions - they are all books I haven't read before so I will keep an eye out.

Hi Danielle - I think there should be a specific section in bookshops just for comfort reading!

Hi adevotedreader - thank you so much for your suggestions. It really sounds like I need to read The Princess Bride!

Ohhh that is a gorgeous cover!! I've never read it - might have to try and find myself a copy.

I tend to pick up Sense and Sensibility when I'm feeling like I need some comforting. And also The Riders, which I think I've mentioned on here to you before - but for the prose rather than the subject matter :)

I have never read it, but I do have a copy here. I have almost read it a few times.

I'm not sure I have a comfort book. I'm happy reading anything that it good - if i need a bit of comfort I eat some chocolate while reading!!

I love I Capture the Castle! Haven't seen that cover before - it's gorgeous!! Jane Austen is my favorite comfort read. I'm looking forward to spending time with P&P this summer.

Hi Megan - it is a stunning cover. I know it shouldn't matter but the cover of a book does impact on my reading of it.

Hi Jackie - I completely agree on the chocolate thing!!

Hi JoAnn - I think Northanger Abbey will be my next comfort read of choice.

Hi Karen, good to hear you're taking care of yourself, but I'm sorry you didn't get to the SWF. On Comfort reading, well, I'd prefer to watch Sabrina with Audrey H. But I did go to my bookshelf to see what I'd pick up and it'd either be one by Susanna Tamaro or Lilly Brett. Although I did like Claire's 'like water for chocolate'.

Hi Tamara - any Audrey movie is definitely a comfort!
