Woolf Love

Deciding to participate in the Woolf In Winter Read Along has opened up a whole new literary crush for me. I never thought I would connect with Virginia Woolf's work as much as I have and I must admit (as you can see above) my book buying restricting policy has taken a bit of a beating of late thanks to my new found obsession!

I am currently reading (and loving) Orlando and will then move on to The Waves as part of the Read Along but after that I have these Woolf books or Woolf related reading to move on to:

A Room of One's Own - Virginia Woolf - I have heard so much about this one and even though it is only the smallest of books I have never picked it up before.

Selected Diaries - Virginia Woolf - A lot of the books of Woolf's I have been reading make reference to her diaries and letters and I am thinking they will shed more light on her writing process and the aspects of her life that contributed to and influenced her work. Also, I love the covers of these Vintage editions.

The White Garden - Stephanie Barron - I first read about this one over at Nonsuch Book and thought it sounded like an interesting read - but it was the Woolf link that clinched it for me.

Vanessa & Virginia - Susan Sellers - The reading of this one will enable me to take place in the Not The TV Book Group discussions which I am looking forward to.

A Writer's Diary - Virginia Woolf - I actually bought this one after hearing Susan Hill rave about it in Howard's End Is On The Landing.

Have you got any other recommendations I should add to my collection?

I love Orlando and hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And A Room Of One's Own is brilliant! Happy Woolf Reading!

There is foot upon foot of snow outside right now but I feel all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about your new crush. The only book I might add to that pile is the Hermione Lee bio.

And I also plan on reading Vanessa and Virginia for the group read. Should be fun as many are joining in for that one. See you on Friday for Orlando. Happy reading!

I am jealous and want to read all of these...but now I am reliant on the library it makes it much harder to be able to choose my reading material. I am very interested in reading Vanessa and Virginia...I am hoping it will be along the same lines of wonderfulness as The Hours. Happy Woolf reading!

I have an author crush on Virigina myself, so am glad you're enjoying her work.

A Room of One's Own is wonderful, clever, witty and vivid. I must re-read it! I'd also recommend its loose sequel Three Guineas and Woolf's other non ficton (especially the Common Reader essays, whcih are all about books) and her novel Jacob's Room, a very affecting study of a young soldier and his family.

I love Woolf - I wrote my university thesis on her work and was lucky enough to spend a year researching her. I recommend Between the Acts which is one of my all time favourite novels - A Room of One's Own is a great read as well.

I've only read the one Woolf (Mrs. Dalloway) but so want to read more of her works. These books look fantastic, and in particular, I've heard amazing things about Vanessa and Virginia, so, hope you enjoy the Woolf-a-thon!

I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for your reviews, so that I can leech off your experiences. :)

I've been looking forward to reading her work for ages, yet somehow I still haven't gotten to it! I think I also had a sense of doubt regarding how well I would connect with her words, but perhaps it's time to buckle down and read :)

That's an amazing reading list--challenging, for sure, but should be really rewarding. I like the immersion technique myself :)

I'll be really interested as to who the S. Barron book is. I had mixed feelings about her Austen mysteries, but liked her thrillers.

btw, I've given you the Prolific Blogger award. Visit me at http://janegs.blogspot.com/2010/02/prolific-blogger-award.html for detail.

Hi thecaptivereader - it looks like a great book doesn't it? I always think it is great to read books in groups or read alongs too.

Hi Nadia - I haven't met a Woolf book I haven't loved yet!

Hi Frances - I'm so glad I could help warm you (we don't need any help with that in this part of the world at the moment!). I'm definitely getting the H Lee biography too.

Hi booksnob - The Hours is another one I have at the moment which I didn't include here because I have borrowed it from my library - I'm really looking forward to it.

Hi adevotedreader - I had an idea you would be a lover of Woolf's work. Thanks for these suggestions which I am adding to my list.

Hi Bloomsbury Bell - I am so jealous!! Studying Woolf and writing your thesis would have been an amazing experience! What was your specific topic - I would love to hear more!

Hi anothercookiecrumbles - I hope my enthusiasm and my reviews tempt you to move on to more Woolf reading!

Hi Simon - I can't wait to hear more...

Hi stockdove - I know I definitely had those doubts and fears before I started reading her. I think reading in a group way has helped me connect more with the books too.

Hi Jane - thank you so much!!

I know there's a recent book about Woolf and her servants that is supposed to be quite good. Glad Orlando is going so well for you!

What a lovely Woolfian stash! A Room of One's Own and A Writer's Diary are both wonderful and may I suggest the Hermione Lee biography too.
