To Read or Not To Read...

I am in a quandary - I purchased a copy of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies last night for my partner - he thinks the whole concept is hilarious and he can't wait to read it. But my problem is - should I read it or not??

There has been so much talk about this book in the blogging world - and the book world in general. Even when I bought the book last night the sales assistant who served me was reading the book himself (and was loving it). Most of what I have heard about the book sounds positive - even staunch Austen addicts like myself seem to be getting on board and taking the book in the spirit in which it was intended - I'm just not sure I can do it! I keep having visions of Jane Austen turning over in her grave at the thought of what Elizabeth and Darcy have been reduced to. I don't want anything to ruin Austen for me!

So, advice gladly accepted - should I go here or not??

Hmmm thats a very very tough choice... I would say give it 50 pages at least you can give us an insight and love it or loathe it, we would all love to hear your thoughts.

Hmmm...that is a difficult choice! I probably wouldn't read it, but I want you to read it, so you can tell me about it! :) How's that for an answer??!!

Hi Savidge Reads - that's a good idea - if I feel I can really not tolerate the vampires in Meryton I can stop!

Hi Laura - I love your answer - that's exactly what I want someone to do for me!!

I agree with Simon, try it out and if you can't stomach it then stop. I won't be reading it myself, so I also agree with Laura.. I would love to hear your thoughts. :D

Hi Claire - thanks for your thoughts. Any particular reason why you are not going to reading this one?? I'm thinking I might be able to get my partner to do a guest post after he finishes reading it - that might keep everyone happy!!

I'm a very strong proponent for your giving it a try! You might enjoy it, and why not read a book you think you might enjoy? I don't think your love of Austen could be hurt by reading this book. In fact, it might make it even greater!

I plan to read it myself just as soon as I get the chance to (i.e. fewer books on my TBR list). But I would love it if you gave it try and then wrote your thoughts on it too. Come on, girlie! Be adventurous! =)

I've never heard of this before! And honestly...I don't know if I could do it! I LOVE zombie movies, but zombie Austen? Hmmmmmm....!

'm usually very wary of Austen sequels, but this one is so out there I will have to try it. How bad can it be, right?

I like to think Jane wouldn't have minded. After all, she did have Elizabeth say:

"I hope I never ridicule what is wise or good. Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistiences do divert me, I own, and I laugh at them whenever I can."

I say go for it. Read it - you never know, it might just end up being your cup of tea. I can't wait to read it! Plus, it'll be great to read your thoughts on the book.

That's a tough choice, but as an Austen fan, I'm not above trying something new in this spinoff genre

I have a copy of this book (I got it as a gift), and I am going to give it a shot at some point. It's silly fun, not meant to replace or even replicate the original. I always thought that although Austen's books were swoon-worthy romances, they were also very tongue-in-cheek and funny. I don't think Jane would be rolling in her grave (or rising it for it in her own bout of zombie vengeance) because of this book. I think she was quite a playful lady!

Hi Jspeyton - I like your attitude!! With encouragement like that I will have to give it a try I think.

Hi Megan - I hear your hesitation and I understand it completely! I don't even usually like zombie movies (although I did find that Sean of the Dead one quite funny).

Hi adevotedreader - thank you for the very apt Elizabeth quote! If she would recommend it I think I need to go ahead!

Hi Nadia - I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the book too.

Hi Serena - I know what you mean. I normally don't mind giving Austen spin offs etc... a go either. This one just seemed a little more wacky than usual!

Hi Steph - this is exactly the sort of conversation I had with my partner about this book. He agrees with you - Jane would have been up for it!

Doooo it! If for no other reason that if you don't at least give it a burl, you'll drive yourself mad wondering about it! :D

Hi antipodeanowl - that's exactly what I've been doing!! I think the decision is clear - I have to at least give it a go.

Karen.. I love P&P, but the reason why I won't be reading this is because I have no interest in zombies whatsoever. Simple as that. Lol. But I'm definitely interested to read your reviews on it. :D

I read it. As long as you don't take it seriously, you'll be fine. I went in thinking what a brilliant, FUN concept it was, and I laughed til I cried, which I really, really needed. It's not meant to be taken seriously- expect the ridiculous and enjoy it for what it is.

Hi Claire - they are pretty much exactly the same reasons I wasn't going to read this one!!

Hi Stephanie - thanks for your comments - laughing until you cry can never be a bad thing!
