The Time Traveler's Wife - Movie

The Time Traveler's Wife is being released at the movies in Australia tomorrow but I was really lucky to be able to see it on our recent trip while in Dublin (just one of the perks I love about travelling overseas - being able to see films months before they make it down under!).

I am a huge fan of the book by Audrey Niffenegger but it did take me two attempts to be able to read this book - I just couldn't get my mind past the concepts in order to focus on the relationships and the story itself. I did what I always did when I have trouble with books I am certain I should be liking - I give them to my best friend to read first - she always seems to be able to help me interpret books in new ways. Anyway, on my second attempt I couldn't put the book down and absolutely devoured it.

Jackie wrote a great reflection the film which I read before I went away - and it only made me want to see it more. Like Jackie I cried when reading the book - and more tears flowed during the movie. It actually takes a lot for me to cry at anything fictional so this is usually a sign (for me at least) that the emotional storyline is authentic and genuine. My partner came to see the movie with me and even though he had not read the book he said that he enjoyed the movie and could follow the concepts easily.

Seeing movies of my favourite books are often a hit and miss affair for me but I have to say that The Time Traveler's Wife was definitely a hit. There was certainly a lot about the movie that was missing (especially content wise) but I felt it captured the essence and feeling of the book perfectly. So much so that I think I will venture out this weekend to watch it all over again...

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie too. I actually didn't enjoy the book as much as I hoped, I think it was a combination of high expectations and not being able to quite wrap my head around the time travel concept! Hopefully that won't be such an issue with the movie.

p.s. I thought it was about time I delurked, I've been reading your blog for a while and have found so many books I want to read from your reviews :)

I am so pleased that you enjoyed this film. The fact that we both cried showed that the film makers managed to do a good job!

Even though it was nothing in comparison to the book I too thought that they made a good job of it. I liked it alot, not an all time fav but definately very enjoyable.

Hi Marg - I hope you enjoy it!

Hi Sujiko - Thanks for commenting - great to hear from you! I had a lot of difficulties with the whole time travel thing too until my friend told me just to ignore that and not even try to work it out - just concentrate on the characters - it was the best advice!

Hi Jackie - I thought my tears were a good sign too! Even though it meant I had to leave the cinema in Dublin at 11pm with sunglasses on!

Hi Jules - no, unfortunately sometimes we have to wait months for movies to be released over here. Very frustrating!

Hi savidgereads - enjoyable it a great way to describe this one. I honestly thought there was no way they could even get close to the book so I think that is why I am so impressed with it.

It didn't compare to the book for me but I still cried! Glad you enjoyed it!

Hi Rachel - I think it would have been a top effort to live up to the book! I also think that if I read read the book straight before seeing the movie I probably would have been disappointed.

TTW is one of my all-time favourite books and I'm so happy that the trailer didn't disappoint me when I saw it for the first time. (It actually left me in tears, but oh well, hehe.) Haven't seen the film yet since it only comes out here in about two weeks, but I'm most definitely planning to since it seems wonderful, just like the books, which I'm very tempted to re-read since I read it ages ago. Brilliant stuff though and I'm SO excited for the film!!!

Hi Bookalicious - I really hope you enjoy the film as much as the book when you get to see it.
