Marie Antoinette

Paris In July is giving me the opportunity to re-visit some of my most favourite movies, one of which is definitely Sofia Coppola's version of Marie Antoinette. The doomed Queen of France has always been an interesting and beloved historical legend for me - the accuracy of my knowledge is probably not great but I love, love, love the story of her personality, actions, thoughts, fashion and life.
This movie version of Marie Antoinette is one you either love or hate I think - and I am definitely in the former category. The movie is visually stunning - from the location of Versailles to the costumes, food, drink and locations consumed by Marie Antoinette and her entourage in vast quantities.

Karen, we're on the same wave - I just watched Coco avant Channel tonight. Will post on it soon - but it's been just wonderful to have the excuse to sit down and watch these movies about our heroines!

You know, I really enjoyed this film, and I know some people didn't care for it -- but I really felt Kirsten Dunst did a fairly nice job in this interpretation of Marie Antoinette. I enjoyed the cinematography of it all -- gorgeous! The "let them eat cake" scene was interesting as well!

I love this movie too, especially the soundtrack and the visuals. It made me want to read more about Marie Antoinette, but some of the books about her are a little dry (the biography the movie was based on by Antonia Fraser for one) or a bit too silly like The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette. I just finished reading a biography of her daughter though (Marie Therese: The Fate of Marie Antoinette's Daughter, by Susan Nagel) that gave a good amount of detail about Marie Antoinette herself from when she came to France to her death without being overwhelming.

Never got around to seeing this because it received mixed reviews but I am such a sucker for great visuals that you have me re-thinking this one. Thanks!

I actually enjoyed this film. I though Dunst did a good job with her role and the visuals were just amazing! Definitely a good movie! Great pick for Paris in July!

I loved this one, too. I'm a sucker for a beautiful movie, and it was truly stunning in appearance. It's one I need to rewatch, too.

Hi T - I can't wait to hear what you think about that movie - I am hoping to watch it this month too.

Hi Coffee - I thought she did a pretty good job too, I think she was perfect for what this particular version of the movie needed in that role.

Hi Joan - you could choose so many beautiful images from this film...

Hi Carolyn - I know what you are saying but I actually didn't mind the Antonia Fraser biography. Have you read the biography based on her fashion?? I can't remember it's title right now but I know I have it on my shelves... It is wonderful.

Hi Frances - If you see this movie purely for the visuals I'm sure you would love it.

Hi Nadia - I find watching this movie is like eating lots of pretty pink cupcakes!!

Hi Andi - I think in that area the film definitely stands out.

Hi Natalie - good luck trying to get this film to the top of your list!
